Out of Bounds20-23 August 2008This interdisciplinary event will involve discussion of the complex relations between art, faith and religiosity through the presentation of formal papers, discussions and performances. The boundaries that define our understanding of private/public, state/family, practice/ideals and love and meaning are continually shifting: how do artists define their lives within this uncertain terrain? How do artists situate their practice in relation to the numberless symbols, ornaments and rituals that arise both through the agency of the state, institutionalised faiths and religions? How do artists act and think in order to clarify the complex dynamic that currently engages art, faith and religiosity, at times rendering them indistinguishable one from another? And through the negotiation of these dynamics does the condition of ‘out of bounds’ ever arise in an artist’s practice, or does today’s transgression necessarily define tomorrow’s new boundaries? The following artists, academics and writers have been invited to offer their views on how they have engaged with the unfolding of these issues, either in their own practice or through their observation of the practice of others, by presenting keynotes, papers, installations, performances and screenings. Janine Antoni, Kate Briggs, Gregory Burgess, Justin Clemens, Ted Colless, Martin Flanagan, Johanna Frueh, Russell Grigg, Dominique Hecq, Lily Hibberd, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Leslie King-Hammond, Lindy Lee, Donna Leslie, Anne Marsh, Mark Minchinton, Tim Mathieson, Kevin Murray, Saul Ostrow, Robert Nelson, Tom Nicholson, Daniel Palmer, Nikos Papastergiadis, Elisabeth Presa, Pip Stokes, Bronwyn Stocks, Kathy Temin, Claudia Terstappen, Paul Uhlmann, Linda Marie Walker; and a season of video screenings by Jalal Toufic.
